As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t live like a normal 27-year-old. I wasn’t well enough to work a traditional job, seeing as I needed to take a break in the middle of the day for a four-hour nap. The outside world felt overwhelming and frightening, and I was struggling to find my place among the living. ![]() I was lost in a liminal space, where the survival skills I’d honed in the context of illness were no longer useful. It should have been a celebratory milestone, but in truth, I had never felt more lost. When I finally emerged from nearly four years of treatment, I learned the brutal lesson that surviving is not the same thing as living. I was diagnosed with leukemia when I was 22.
