This seemingly complex, yet rather simple story between mother and daughter forces readers to confront their own family relationship and realize that everyone has a past we cannot judge them for. In an effort to rekindle the relationship between Sidda and Vivi, the Ya-Yas send Sidda a scrapbook, detailing their lives, so that Sidda could better understand why her mother is the way she is. This story shifts back and forth between telling stories from the youth of the Ya-Yas- Vivi, Teensy, Caro, and Necie-in 1930s Louisiana, and the current life of Siddalee Walker, Vivi’s daughter, in the 1990s.Īfter a slanderous review of her mother in a public journal, Vivi disowns Sidda, sending her in a tailspin that results in Sidda traveling across the country and breaking off her engagement with her fiancé, Connor. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Skull wars by david hurst thomas![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The recent history of the remains of Kennewick man is put in context in a concise prologue, which anchors everything that follows, giving relevance to what might otherwise be read as dry soporific history. ![]() After all, the author, an eminent archaeologist, persuaded Vine Deloria, a leading American Indian polemicist, to write the book’s foreword. Thus Skull Wars is an apt title even though the details of history reveal a much less polarized relationship between the two. Only a few have had both identities simultaneously, and there is a popular presumption that the two are natural enemies. He uses the incendiary Kennewick case, which is still in litigation, as his entrée into the intertwined history of archaeologists and Native Americans. One has to be either foolish or courageous to write such a book, and Thomas is no fool. Because it is all of these things it is also terrific ethnohistory. It is at once a history of American archaeology, a multiple ethnography in which the ethnographers are examined as closely as their subjects, a treatise on the nature of science, a discourse on current politics, and a prize-worthy example of modern journalism. ![]() ![]() ![]() Stating “My brother helps Dad carry the tools” doesn’t quite capture the fact that the little guy “holds” the hammer while Dad holds him, nor does she mention that while Mom and Dad toil and sweat, she and her brother splash in a wading pool. this is Jonathan Beans retelling of his own familys true experience, and includes an afterword with photographs from the authors. The narrator, who considers herself integral to the success of the project, explains each step carefully, but as the audience takes in the wonderfully detailed, often humorous cartoon-styled pictures, they see what her words don’t describe as well as what they do. The installation of an old fashioned stove keeps the work proceeding apace during one more winter and the family is in their newly completed home by springtime. Winter rudely intervenes, but warm weather means the foundation can be excavated and lined, lumber measured and trimmed, and a frame raising party hosted for family and neighbors. ![]() The young daughter of the featured parents supplies the matter-of-fact narration, explaining how the trailer for their temporary housing is pulled near the site, water and electricity are hooked up, and the work of collecting stones for the foundation and staking out the footprint begins. A young girl narrates her familys move from the city to the country, where they have bought a piece of land and live in a trailer while they build a house. I have read all of the Light Novels I linked to above, and I loved some of them, but not because they were a perfect format of novel and anime - mainly because I already loved the world building that was done in the manga, anime or both and then got a deeper dive into the characters as a whole (in some ways). ![]() I LOVE manga, but I also love reading novels, and I wanted something in between, and Light Novels were not what I was looking for.
