5/27/2023 0 Comments Raymond feist magician![]() The story is a smooth read, with lots of action to keep the reader entertained. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking to make the transition from YA fantasy to fantasy fiction. I don’t know why, but even though I loved it, I never picked up another Raymond E Feist novel after that, so I’ve not read the remainder of the Riftwar Saga to this day. ![]() I was recommended Magician by a boy I had a crush on, so of course I picked it up straight away. I had read it not long after I had finished reading the Belgariad and the Elenium by David and Leigh Eddings, so I was starting into my love of epic fantasy sagas. ![]() I first read Magician when I was about 14. I was once an orphaned kitchen boy, with no family and no prospects, but I am destined to become a master magician… I longed to train as a warrior and fight alongside the Duke like my foster-brother, but when the time came, I was not offered that choice. ![]() ![]() War had come to the Kingdom of the Isles, and in the years that followed it would scatter my friends across the world. The world had changed even before I discovered the foreign ship wrecked on the shore below Crydee Castle, but it was the harbinger of the chaos and death that was coming to our door. ![]() ![]() ![]() Near the end of this book there was a chapter headed “Challenge to the Reader”. The books are said to be classics of the fair play school of detective fiction, where the reader is given all of the clues necessary to solve the crime. ![]() The story is that this first book in the series was published when a family friend, who writes the introduction to the book, persuades Ellery to allow its publication. The books maintain the conceit that they are written by Ellery based on his true life experience investigating crimes with his father. As well as being the ‘author’, Ellery Queen is also the main character, a young detective fiction writer who assists his father, Inspector Richard Queen of the New York Police Department, to solve crimes. The Ellery Queen franchise eventually extended to a radio series, several television series, movies, plays, comic books, board games and jigsaw puzzles, and even a magazine which is still published today. This is the first Ellery Queen novel of thirty six written by the cousins Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee, who between them created the Ellery Queen pseudonym, and forty four other novels written by ghost writers (including eleven juvenile novels as Ellery Queen Jr). ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments Dr seuss apple book![]() ![]() ![]() These titles were removed to ensure that Seuss’s work will continue to sell, and continue to be adapted to film and television it certainly wasn’t an effort to erase the artist from our culture. Seuss Enterprises is tasked with protecting Seuss’s legacy - removing controversial elements from his work is, arguably, more about maintaining the profit pipeline than making the world a better place. ![]() ![]() I’m not convinced that removing them entirely was the best decision (remnants of an openly racist society can potentially be used as educational tools, rather than pretending that such attitudes never existed), but this was a business decision, not an act of empathy. Those six discontinued books do indeed contain racist caricatures, the casual bigotry you see in old Looney Tunes cartoons and Disney classics all the time. Of course, the entirety of Seuss’s work cannot be judged by his worst impulses later in life, Seuss appeared to evolve, and wrote several stories preaching the value of tolerance, poking fun at the absurdity of perceived racial superiority The Sneetches and Horton Hears a Who are famous for their inclusive themes. ![]() ![]() ![]() (Well out of his earshot, of course.) Here we have the team discussing Amaranthe's views of him: "Remember, she thinks Sicarius is mellow." Other characters also love to comment on how quirky Sicarius can be, for a mass murderer. ![]() It's so damn funny because you can imagine Sicarius just goes through life like "Huh," was all he said as he walked out the door. "Truly, Sicarius, if it weren't for your sinister reputation, I'd suspect you of a sense of humor." Especially since his trademark response is an emotionless "Huh". Once we meet him, he is indeed cold and murderous, but in such a dry way that humor naturally follows in his wake.
